As groundbreaking as the Cadillac Eldorado was in its debut year, Cadillac returned an even better model for its sophomore year. With its new-for-1968 motor, making 375 horsepower and 525 pounds-feet of torque, this car can break its fronts tires loose with little effort.
Cadillacs had become “the Standard of the World” by the 1960s but if there was one Cadillac that made even other Cadillac owners notice, it was Cadillac’s Eldorado. The Eldorado underwent subtle changes for a 1968 facelift including a restyled hood cutline to accommodate hidden windshield wipers, the addition of rear side marker lamps embossed with the Cadillac wreath, and relocation of the front turn signals to the outer edges of the grille.
This example was made during the fourth week of August 1967 at General Motors’ Detroit, Michigan factory and sold new on 12/07/1967 at Parkhill Motor Sales Inc. in Champaign Illinois. Dressed in a stunning San Mateo Red Metallic exterior (code 48), with a White Cross-Grain Padded Vinyl Roof (code 01). The car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order but there are blemishes visible at close range. The hideaway headlights from 1967 continued. The body is straight, the engine bay is in good order, the Optima battery looks new, the trunk is very clean and comes with a jack and a full-sized spare tire plus cover. The car’s chrome bumpers remain in very good order.
This big, front-wheel drive Caddy rolls on American Classic wide whitewall tires, size 235/75R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on steel wheels topped with full wheel covers. The wheel covers are in very good order, as are the tires.
Under that big, counterbalanced hood is a 472 CID V-8, which replaced the 429 CID V-8. The new engine, with its four-barrel carburetor, generated 35 more horsepower and 45 lbs-ft more of torque. The new engine incorporated emission controls into the overall design, as well as allowing accessories to bolt directly to the block itself, instead of being suspended by brackets. This was done to reduce noise and vibration. The new V-8 underwent over two million miles of testing before being put into production, which Cadillac boasted as proof of its durability and strength.
Married to the engine is a Turbo Hydramatic 325 three-speed automatic and it is backed by a 2.94:1 final gearing. There are several driver’s convenience features – automatic climate control, variable-ratio power steering, power brakes with front discs, power front seats, tilting and telescoping steering column, power windows and power locks.
Inside, the car’s white leather interior with red trim (code 454) is in very good order overall but here there are a few blemishes. The front bucket seats with center console and rear bench look great and red carpeting covers the massive flat floor. The headliner above mirrors the rest of the interior’s condition. Several courtesy lights still work, and the dashboard and inner door panels are in very good order. An attractive new Rosewood appliqué was used on the instrument panel as well as the door and quarter trim panels. The instrument panel padding was beefed up and interior controls and hardware were redesigned to lessen the chance of injury during an accident. A careful inspection will reveal the many changes made between the 1967 and 1968 instrument panels, even though at first glance they might appear to be identical. The column shifter and Kenwood AM/FM stereo, with CD player, complete the interior.
With the Eldorado being such a radical change for Cadillac, customers who bought one in its first year provided feedback to Cadillac regarding their new cars. One typical suggestion was that the car didn’t ride like a Cadillac, so for 1968, the spring rates were lowered and softened somewhat to provide a bit more cushion to the ride.
New standard features for 1968 included power rear quarter ventipanes, which eliminated the somewhat unusual situation in 1967 of having power windows up front, with manual windows in the rear. Power front disc brakes were a much-needed improvement and all Eldorados received them for 1968.
Production also increased to 24,528 cars, an improvement of 37.8 percent for the model year. Cadillac set its fourth consecutive yearly sales record in 1968, despite a 21-day UAW strike in November 1967 at the Fisher Body Fleetwood Plant in Detroit.
Coupe competition to this Eldorado in 1968 included AMC’s Ambassador, Buick’s Electra 225, Riviera and Wildcat, Cadillac’s own Calais and Coupe de Ville, Chrysler’s 300, New Yorker and Newport, Dodge’s Coronet, Monaco and Polara, Ford’s Thunderbird, Imperial’s Crown Coupe, Mercury’s Cougar and Montego, Oldsmobile’s 98 Holiday and Toronado, Pontiac’s Executive and new-for-’68 Grand Prix.
Documentation includes original manual, original service book, a binder with photos, web information and parts catalog pages for the 1967-1969 Cadillac Eldorado.
