Vitus Bering (1681-1741), a Danish cartographer and explorer in Russian Navy service who found in 1725-1828 that there was not a land connection between Asia and America. He explored the north-eastern coastline of Asia and the NW coastline of America (now Alaska). The Bering Strait separates the two continents and the Bering Sea and Bering Land Bridge are named in his honor. The extreme weather and shortages of food were severe handicaps for this expedition. He served between 1704 and 1741 when he died, aged 60. Recent DNA and climate science has found evidence that humans from Asia traveled to America via the Bering Land Bridge, that allowed travel due to the lower ocean levels during the Ice Age.
SS Vitus Bering: this 441' WW II Liberty Ship, was named in his honor and built in 1943 in Richmond, CA. This proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II. Records show the vessel survived the war and later scrapped in 1961.
